Internship at Egnyte: My First Byte of the Tech World

I am Harshitha, a recent Bachelor of Technology graduate in Computer Science from PES University, Bengaluru. As a computer science student, problem-solving has always been my driving force. In my final year of B.Tech, I had the incredible opportunity to join Egnyte as an intern. This being my first industrial internship, I was excited, happy, and a little nervous all at once. My prior experience was primarily with college projects and hackathons, so the leap into the industry felt significant.

The simple application I submitted to join Egnyte quickly turned into one of the most enriching learning experiences of my academic journey. This blog post is a reflection on my transformative six-month internship at Egnyte, and I hope it serves as an inspiring look into the world of a first-time tech intern.

Laying the Foundation: Training and Onboarding

During my first few weeks at Egnyte, I focused on comprehensive training. My fellow interns and I were assigned two great mentors who helped us brush up on our basics, streamlined our onboarding, and guided us through the company's tech stack. We also delved deep into understanding Egnyte's products and their capabilities through the provided courses, which was crucial for grasping the company's core business and vision.

A Memorable First: The Egnyte Hackathon

While still in the training process, I had the exciting opportunity to participate in my first internal Egnyte hackathon. The goal was to enhance information retrieval by building a LangChain retriever that combined data from both web sources and Egnyte. With very little prior knowledge of the topic and just two days to work with, I was reminded of my college hackathon days. My fellow interns and I teamed up to form an all-intern group. We dug through blogs and resources, and to our pride, we managed to finish the project within the deadline. Seeing our project showcased alongside those of other Egnyters made us really happy.

Diving Deep: My Journey With the Datalab Team

After the initial training, I joined the AI domain within the Datalab team, which is responsible for building AI services at scale. I was assigned a dedicated Datalab mentor who would guide me throughout the rest of my internship. This mentorship played a pivotal role in shaping my internship experience.

Soon after, I was assigned my first major project under the guidance of my mentor: solving the challenge of efficiently organizing large volumes of construction-related documents for architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) customers. To address this, I worked on building a document classification service tailored to their needs.

This project was a game-changer, helping me understand the entire lifecycle of a product, from research to production. I conducted in-depth research to choose the best machine learning model for document categorization, developed the service code, created comprehensive test cases to ensure reliability and finally, saw it move to production, where it would be used by real customers. All the theoretical concepts I      learned in college—specifically DevOps principles, the QA and production environments and the importance of thorough testing came to life right before my eyes.

I still vividly remember the satisfaction of my first merge request, every comment I addressed and every fix I made felt incredibly special. Building something truly valuable and knowing it would be useful for customers was extremely motivating.

Embracing Innovation: Exploring New AI Frontiers

Being part of the AI team also gave me the chance to work on several impactful proofs of concept (POCs). One key challenge we addressed was the need for consistent, standardized communication between AI agents and clients across Egnyte's platform. To tackle this, I had the chance to work with my co-intern on model-context-protocol (MCP). We created a sample client and server to expose the Egnyte Copilot Agent through a standardized protocol. I also had the unique opportunity to expose the Egnyte Copilot Agent via the agent-to-agent (A2A) protocol, enabling seamless communication between agents for improved coordination and utilization.

In the rapidly evolving world of AI, working on these cutting-edge initiatives and seeing them go live at Egnyte gave me an unmatched sense of accomplishment. Egnyte’s strong culture of innovation      instilled in me a deep appreciation for staying curious, thinking boldly, and continuously seeking impactful solutions.

Working on multiple projects simultaneously also taught me invaluable lessons in multitasking, prioritizing tasks, and effective time management. Streamlining my work to meet project requirements became a key skill I developed throughout my internship.

The Egnyte Culture

Beyond the technical learning, the unwavering support and guidance from everyone at Egnyte—from juniors to seniors, managers, and leadership have been truly remarkable. Being part of a team with diverse individuals from across the globe has significantly broadened my perspective and cultivated a genuinely collaborative environment. My daily interactions with colleagues from the Poland office have always helped me perform better, and I am truly grateful for them.

All the virtual happy hours have been great for bonding with the Egnyte family. We also have a monthly "office day" in various cities where everyone gathers in a co-working space. These days are always fun, engaging, and offer a great learning experience. It’s something I look forward to every month.

Egnyte Synergize Pune 2025

I also had the opportunity to attend Synergize 2025 in Pune, an event where Egnyte India teams gathered for collaboration, demos, and team activities. As interns, we were given the incredible chance to present one of our AI-focused proofs of concept, which revolved around storing structured data and querying it. Even though it was a POC and not a fully developed project, the recognition and appreciation we received for our presentation were immensely motivating. What truly stood out was the unwavering support from the VPs themselves, who helped us refine our presentation just minutes before we went on stage. Their dedication and genuine investment in our growth instilled a deep sense of commitment and inspired us to give our best at every step.

In addition to delivering my presentation, I took part in various co-cultural activities, something I truly enjoy. These experiences helped me connect with teams beyond the tech domain, and I quickly felt like part of a larger family at Egnyte. I even had the chance to interact with the CEO, VPs, and other senior leaders—conversations that I will carry with me for a lifetime. The insightful sessions about various Egnyte teams helped me learn how the company, which began with just five founders, evolved into the remarkable organization it is today. Engaging with such accomplished yet humble individuals taught me the true value of humility.
